Even with just about 10 percent of the structural steel up, Special Transit’s capital campaign project has a distinct shape – it now looks like a building, a big one. For the next few weeks, the construction site will be a giant Erector Set with crews working to achieve the topping off of the structure at the end of July. In addition, paving crews will work to complete Butte Mill Road and 63rd Street by early August when the traffic that has been detoured onto Stazio Dr. will be able to drive by the front of Special Transit’s new facility. Stay tuned for more…
The $11.25 million project will double the size of Special Transit’s current facility from 18,000 to 36,000 square feet and expand its footprint from 1.3 to 6.8 acres. Designed by OZ Architecture, the innovative building will be a model for green building including conservation aspects such as a solar panel array, low-flow water fixtures, a radiant floor slab in the garage/maintenance area, xeriscaping, an energy-efficient heating and cooling system, and self-dimming and occupancy sensing lighting. Golden Triangle Construction, the general contractor, has projected a completion date of late 2010.
Demographic studies have projected that the aging population and other groups that Special Transit serves will double by 2020. The new facility will position Special Transit to serve its target population and the greater community for decades to come.
Special Transit has raised all but $350,000 of the cost of the new facility through generous gifts from community members, foundations and various public sources, including a $5.25 million grant from the state of Colorado that must be matched.
We need your help to match this grant and to complete the new home for Special Transit. Gifts of $250 to $9,999 will be recognized on the Community That Cares plaque in the Memorial Garden and Patio. Gifts of $10,000 or more will be recognized on the Major Donors Wall of Honor in the new Atrium. All gifts will help build the new Special Transit headquarters and improve the lives of our neighbors with mobility needs.
